If you’re extremely knew to battling Axies and don’t know the first thing about Arena Mode, I’d recommend starting with our Axie Infinity Arena Mode FAQ section at the bottom.
The Axie Wrangler All Aqua Arena Team
First things first, let me start this Axie Arena Mode PvP Guide off by saying that I don’t have a standard team. As the old saying goes, “Do as I say and not as I do.”

What I mean by that, is that I am absolutely not recommending you try to assemble a weird all fish team like me.. heck, I’ll probably go back to the drawing board eventually, but for now, I like it, I’ve gotten used to it, I’ve got them to pretty high levels in Adventure Mode, and well, most importantly, I win.
The last thing I’ll say about my team is that I just kinda picked ’em randomly. At the time, I was just looking to breed some aquatic Axies, but I’ve learned a lot about PvP since Season 18 started.
Axie Infinity PvP Arena Mode Season 18 Changes
For those of you that are joining the Axie Infinity Universe after the Season 18 changes, let me give you a brief overview of the recent changes that have had a rippling effect through the game’s multi-coin economy:
On August 9th, Axie Infinity announced that they would significantly reduce the amount of SLP earned through PvE (Adventure Mode) and the Daily Quest from 100 to 50 and 50 to 25, respectively. This was in hopes of reducing the SLP supply and combatting bots, while also hoping to raise the price of SLP back to it’s previous $.25-30+ range, which had seen scholars making relatively good money for the month of July.
Unfortunately, this didn’t work as expected. Instead, the price of AXS skyrocketed from around $40-45 to it’s current range of $65-80 (as of August 17th, 2021). In response, the next day, the Axie Infinity team lowered the breeding cost from 4 AXS to 2 AXS.
Axie Arena Mode Economics [August 17th, 2021]
At the same time the SLP and AXS changes were happening, the Axie Marketplace entered a freefall. With non-PvP Axies now worthless for farming SLP, the Axie Marketplace saw a huge upswell in low-end Axies, driving down prices in a race to the bottom, with Axies going for around $200-250, down from $300-400 just days before.
A Great Time for New Players!
This low-end Axie sell-off, when combined with the lowered AXS costs for anyone that had been holding AXS for more than one day, led to a huge boon in breeding, since the demand for PvP Axies had just gone up. For a day or two, PvP Axie prices held strong, before their prices began tanking as well. Right now, you can get a solid Damage PvP Aqua Axie for $300-350 (was $500+ before the change) and a tank with pretty much whatever parts you want typically for $400-450.
So that catches you up to where we are on PvP from an economical standpoint.
How much do I need to invest to get started with Axie Arena Mode?
For a budget PvP team, you’re probably looking at a minimum investment of about $1000-1200 at the time of writing this.
The challenge then, will be daily allotted energy, but that’s a topic for another day.
If you’re truly new to the game and this is the first thing you’re reading – you need 3 Axies to play. That’s why the starting investment is at least $1000 for a team that can farm SLP. You can buy a team of all low-end Axies for less, but you may even struggle in Adventure Mode nowadays.
Regardless, the current team build meta is 1 tank and 2 damage dealers. Don’t worry, you’ll see what all of that means in a second.
Axie Arena Mode aka PvP (Player versus Player)
Axie Infinity PvP Meta [August, 2021]
The next step in the Axie Arena Mode PvP Guide is discussing the meta.
In a game, the meta essentially means the standard or the status quo. It’s the typical way something is done. If you’re playing an MMORPG, you may want a tank or a melee paired with a range damage or a mage. In a MOBA like League of Legends, the meta is a Top, Jungle, Mid, ADC & Support. In Call of Duty Warzone, the meta is using whichever gun recently become most advantageous in the last update, etc.
The Axie Infinity meta, as I mentioned before, is 1 tank and 2 damage dealers.
But before I go any further, it is super important to understand that the meta is just the meta. You can do whatever the heck you want. You definitely don’t have to follow it to a tee. I definitely didn’t. But knowing what you’re up against will help you know what you want to face it with.
Like Pokemon, Axies have types. There are 9 types grouped into 3 groups of 3, as you can see above.
Each Axie has 6 parts, and each part can be one of 6 of these types (Mech, Dawn and Dusk are only body types, they do not have individual parts).
Of these 6 parts, 4 of them correspond to abilities. These abilities are represented by the cards seen at the bottom of the PvP screenshots. Axies can perform the abilities on these cards during battle.
Axie PvP Statistics
Each Axie type has its own specific advantages and disadvantages when it comes to its statistics like health, speed, skill and morale.
While health and speed are self-explanatory, skill and morale are a little less obvious.
What do skill and morale do in Axie Infinity?
- Skill is a statistic responsible for the extra damage an Axie does for performing more abilities in one turn.
- Morale is a statistic responsible for critical strike chance and the number of health bars an Axie has during last stand.

It’s also important to note that an Axie doesn’t have to have parts or abilities that are the same as its body type. However, it’s my understanding that there is a damage bonus when an Axie performs a move the same as its body type.
The next thing to note with the types in PvP is that the type of part that is associated with the move is counted against the body type of the Axie it’s being used against.
Axie Arena Team Build Meta 1: Plant, Beast, Bird
Why are Beast and Bird Axies good for PvP?
Plant, Beast, Bird is one of the most standard and common team compositions. Plants are used as tanks to absorb damage while beasts and birds do the damage.
Birds are typically the fastest of all the types and beast have the highest moral, which gives them the highest chance for critical strikes. This can combine for a lot of damage, but as you can see from the overall health of each Axie, these types are typically less tanky than others.
Axie Arena Team Build Meta 2: Plant, Beast, Fish
Why are Aquatic aka Fish Axies good for PvP?
The second common Axie PvP Mode Meta is Plant, Beast, Fish. This build sacrifices speed for health and is quite common, since there are many 100+ damage abilities available for aquatic types.
Axie Arena Team Build Meta 3: Plant, Fish, Other Damage
What other Axies go well with Fish Axies for PvP?
Aquatic Axies, also known as Fish Axies, are often paired with Bird Axies or other Fish Axies to make a standard 1 Tank, 2 Damage team composition. Sometimes, you’ll see Dawn Types with Bird Moves or Mech or even Fish Types with Beast Moves too.
Axie Arena Team Build Off-Meta Examples
What are some other Axie team types you might fight in Axie Arena Mode?
While I’ve discussed the standard above, you’ll also encounter plenty of teams that are much different. And that’s the fun of the game! You can try and build the best team that you can imagine, you don’t have to follow any rules! There are plenty of great teams that don’t follow the formulas mentioned above, so feel free to think outside of the box!
Arena Mode Newest Trend: Chain Stunners
What are the Reptile and Bug Axie builds for Axie Arena Mode?
You heard it in Axie Wrangler’s Axie Arena Mode PvP Guide first! The newest addition to the meta is the multi-stun Reptile and Bug Axies. Some of these Axies have a 3rd stun specifically for fish types that absolutely destroys my team. But that’s just the price I pay every once in a while for buying a tank both ironically and impulsively 😅
Anyways, these Chain Stunners have filled the role between tank and full damage axies as a sort of utility offensive tank. And they typically has a zero energy move that slows (Mystic Rush) and Allergic Reaction, which does 130% damage to debuffed targets. This makes them effective damage dealers that can waste a lot of an opponent’s cards and energy through stuns.
If you’re unsure about energy and cards, we’ll dive into more of the basics next!
