Breeding in Axie Infinity is a method of creating a new Axie by producing and hatching an Egg. Its main purpose is to generate an Axie with the desired traits such as abilities/cards, body parts, and class.

1. Breeding Requirements
In order to start breeding, you will need 2 Axies, a fixed amount of AXS, and a certain amount of SLP.
Definition of Terms:
Axie – An Axie is an NFT (non-fungible token) creature that you can use to play Axie Infinity. You need a set of 3 Axies in order to participate in the two game modes: PvE (Player vs Environment) and PvP (Player vs Player).
For breeding purposes, you only need 2 Axies.
AXS – Stands for Axie Infinity Shard. It is an in-game currency and the main governance token of Axie Infinity. Unlike SLP, AXS is scarcer and more valuable. You can earn it as a reward for playing the game really competitively. You can also buy it from other players.
AXS can be used to breed Axies, sold to other players, or participate in the governance of Axie Infinity.
SLP – Stands for Smooth Love Potion. It is an in-game currency that can be earned by casually and/or competitively playing the game. You can also buy it from other players.
SLP can be used to breed Axies or sold to other players.
2. Breeding Costs
Each Axie can be used for breeding for total amount of 7 times. For every breeding instance, you need 0.5 AXS and a certain amount of SLP, depending on the breed count of each participating Axie. While the required amount of AXS is fixed for all breeding instances, the required amount of SLP depends on the breed count of the two Axies that are being bred.
Here’s a Table Showing the SLP Cost for Each Breed Count:

Remember that each Axie has an additive effect on the SLP required for breeding.
If you breed a “virgin” Axie (0/7) with an Axie with a breed count of (6/7), you will need a total of 0.5 AXS and 32400 SLP.
If you breed an Axie with a breed count of (1/7) and an Axie with a breed count of (2/7), you will need a total of 0.5 AXS and 7200 SLP.
3. Axie Genetics
Before you dive into breeding Axies, you should learn about Axie genetics. Axie genetics play a vital role in determining genes, mutations, classes, and body parts.
Each Axie has 18 genes, distributed equally among its 6 body parts. This means that for each body part, there are three genes that represent it. These three genes are the dominant gene (D), the recessive gene (R1), and the minor recessive gene (R2).
Dominant genes (D) determine the body parts that are physically present on each Axie, as well as the matching abilities/cards.
Through breeding, genes can be passed down with certain probabilities, depending on their dominance.
Here Are the Corresponding Probabilities:
- Dominant genes (D) have 37.5% chance of being passed down to the offspring.
- Recessive genes (R1) have 9.375% chance of being passed down to the offspring.
- Minor recessive genes (R2) have 3.125% chance of being passed down to the offspring.
It is important to know this information if you plan on breeding and producing the desired body parts and cards/skills for your Axie. There is actually a calculator that you can use to simulate the breeding chances and probabilities for when you plan to breed two specific Axies.
While it’s still not possible to see recessive genes (R1) and minor recessive genes (R2) of Axies through the Axie Infinity Inventory and Marketplace as it is, you can install Freak’s Axie Extention on Chrome to view them for the meantime.
If you want to simulate Axie breeding and get insight about breeding chances and probabilities, you can use this Breeding Simulator from AxieZone.

In some cases, certain genes mutate into entirely different genes that are absent from the parents. These do happen, albeit with a low chance.
For the 6 recessive genes (R1) and the 6 minor recessive genes (R2), mutations happen at a 10% chance. On the other hand, dominant genes (D) have 0% chance of mutating.
Here Are the Chances for An Offspring to Have R1 and R2 Mutations:
Learning about mutations is important in breeding, especially when you’re trying to breed multiple generations of Axies.
There is a 50% chance of passing down the class of a parent Axie to its offspring. This means that if both parents have the same class, the chance of passing down the class is 100%.
In some cases, when both of the parent Axies are “pure breed”, there is a 33% chance that their offspring become an Axie of the secret class.
If you want to learn more about the various classes in Axie Infinity, you can try reading this Axie Infinity: Classes Guide.
4. How to Breed Axies
Once you’re all set and ready to breed some Axies, all you have to do is go to your Axie Infinity “My Account” dashboard and select “Inventory.”
From your inventory, select the Axie you want to breed. Click/Tap the “Breed” button. Find your Axie a mate from the same inventory.
Check the required amount of SLP and AXS. Click/Tap “Let’s Breed” and it’s WooHoo time!
Once breeding is done, an Axie Egg will show up in your inventory.
5. Axie Morphing
It takes 5 days for an Axie Egg to hatch. Simply wait 5 days and check your Axie Egg if it’s ready to hatch. Once it is ready, select “Morph into Adult” and you’ll have your full-fledged adult Axie ready for use!
6. Breeding Tips and Tricks
- You cannot breed Axies that are siblings or have the same parents. You cannot also breed Axies that have a parent-offspring relationship.
- It only takes 3 Axies to breed multiple generations of Axies. This means that you can breed infinitely with only 3 Axies as long as you have the required amount of AXS and SLP.
- When buying Axies for breeding from the Marketplace, be sure to check the breed count. The lower the breed count, the more you can breed and the less the SLP you will need for breeding.
- An Axie with a breed count of (0/7) is called a “virgin” Axie. This Axie can be bred with the least amount of SLP.
- On the other hands, an Axie with a breed count of (7/7) is called a “sterile” Axies. This Axie cannot breed anymore.
- Axies with special features such as “Mystic” and “Holiday” body parts cannot pass down said traits to their offspring.
